“But how did Lutetia escape from the inner Solar System and reach the main asteroid belt?” Pierre Vernazza (ESO), the lead author of the paper, said.

Astronomers have estimated that less than 2 percent of the bodies located in the region where Earth formed, ended up in the main asteroid belt, but most of the bodies of the inner Solar System disappeared after a few million years as they were incorporated into the young planets that were forming.

However, some of the largest, with diameters of about 100 kilometres or more, were ejected to safer orbits further from the Sun.

Lutetia, which is about 100 kilometres across, may have been tossed out from the inner parts of the young Solar System if it passed close to one of the rocky planets and thus had its orbit dramatically altered.

The sequencing was accomplished by a global research partnership — The International Initiative for Pigeon pea Genomics (IIPG) — led by ICRISAT.

It comprised of institutes such as BGI–Shenzhen (China), and the research laboratories of University of Georgia, University of California-Davis, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and National Centre for Genome Resources, all in the US.

The research comes close on the heels of a historic breakthrough achieved by Indian scientists for increasing arhar production.

In an entirely indigenous effort, a group of 31 scientists from the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, state agricultural universities and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), led by Nagendra Kumar Singh from ICAR’s National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology at New Delhi, decoded the genome of pigeon pea (arhar).

Singh said the new variety, that would be developed from decoding of arhar genome, has potential to raise its productivity by three times to about two tonne per hectare from 650 kg per hectare at present.

Pigeon pea, grown on about 5 million hectares in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and South-Central America, is a very important staple food for millions of the poor in the semi-arid regions, the ICRISAT release added. “Now that the world is faced with hunger and famine particularly in the ‘Horn of Africa’ brought about by the worst drought of the decades, science-based sustainable agricultural development solutions are vital in extricating vulnerable dryland communities out of poverty and hunger for good,” says ICRISAT Director General William D Dar.

Rajeev Varshney, the lead scientist for ICRISAT pigeonpea genome sequencing project said “at the moment, in general, it can take 6-10 years to breed a new variety. With the use of this genome sequence data, in the future, we could be breeding a new variety in just about 3 years”.

USC scientist, Swedish researchers decode 18th century document!

Thousands of characters letters and obscure symbols filled the more than 100 pages of a centuries-old text that had been located in East Berlin after the end of the Cold War. No one knew what the text meant, or even what language it was in. It was a mystery that USC computer scientist Kevin Knight and two Swedish researchers sought to solve.

After months of painstaking work and a few trips down the wrong path, the moment finally came when the team knew it was on to something. Out of what had been gibberish emerged one word: ceremonie — a variation of the German word for ceremony. Knight said they figured out the rest from there.

Breaking the code on the document known as the Copiale Cipher revealed the rituals and political observations of an 18th century secret German society, as well as the group's unusual fascination with eye surgery and ophthalmology.

But the larger significance of the team's work wasn't necessarily the discovery, it was how they arrived at it.

Knight said he was driven by a puzzle that required him to outwit a centuries-old group's quest for secrecy. He was also inspired by the fact that many others had tried and failed to decipher it. "I defeated their security!" he said.

"For me, the fun is in cracking the code," he said. "It has passed through a lot of hands, but you persevered and could read what other people couldn't."

In January, Knight began working with Beata Megyesi and Christiane Schaefer of Uppsala University in Sweden. In April, they had it figured out.

"You start to see patterns, then you reach the magic point where a word appears," he said. It was then, he said, "you no longer even care what the document's about."

The team ran statistical analyses of 80 languages, initially believing that the code lay in the Roman letters between the symbols that dotted the pages. Using a combination of brain power and computer wizardry, they broke the code by figuring out the symbols.

Fellow computational linguists and computer scientists said the work of Knight and his team has led to some new techniques to break codes that have long stumped them, such as the Voynich Manuscript, a medieval document, or the last section of "Kryptos," an encrypted message carved into a sculpture at CIA headquarters.

Graeme Hirst, a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, said Knight's work reminded him of that of Alan Turing, the English computer scientist and mathematician who cracked German codes during World War II. "Kevin and his team are channeling their inner Turing," he said, "except they are faster and better because of all that we've learned."

The project may have been a joint effort between man and machine, but Hirst said this was evidence that the cunning and nimble researcher was the key to solving the code — not a computer's ability for statistical analysis.

In our modern day, it seems that nearly everything we eat carries the risk of being unhealthy. Eating fish has known health benefits, yet some species of fish may contain unsafe levels of mercury and PCB's. Eating fresh fruit is known to be healthy, yet many fruits are sprayed with chemical pesticides the residues of which are of questionable risk. The same can be said of vegetables.

Whether the above mentioned food items are healthy or unhealthy is beyond the scope of this article. It does point out, though, that the debate continues on which foods contribute to good health, and which foods pose a health risk. This article will present information for the reader to determine which camp lobster belongs in: healthy or unhealthy.

Let's start with the few arguments that put forth the case that lobster is unhealthy. There are not many. We've read that one doctor advises against eating lobster because it may contain parasites and viruses. Nothing like pointing out the obvious. Every living creature on Earth may contain parasites and viruses, which is why any animal-based food product should be cooked before being eaten. Cooking eliminates this risk. One risk that cooking will not eliminate is excess levels of mercury. No matter how much you cook any fish or seafood item, it will not remove mercury.

How much mercury does lobster have? Before we answer that question, we need to look a little at mercury and the reasons it is in seafood to begin with. The FDA states in their report "What you need to know about mercury in fish and shellfish" that "nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of mercury" and that "Mercury occurs naturally in the environment and can also be released into the air through industrial pollution. Mercury falls from the air and can accumulate in streams and oceans."

What can be gleaned from this report are two facts. One, that all fish and shellfish contain traces of mercury. Two, Mercury occurs naturally as well. If mercury occurs naturally, it is probably safe to assume that all fish and shellfish have always contained traces of mercury. Which begs the question: are mercury levels in fish and shellfish any higher now than they were 50 or 100 years ago? The answer is that scientists do no know for sure, as tests for mercury in fish were not done back then. Regardless, the FDA lists four fish varieties that have higher level of mercury than all others: shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. They also list five that are very low in mercury: shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish. Lobster is closer to the 5 on the low end than the 4 on the high end.

Even the 4 fish varieties that have higher levels of mercury are safe to eat in moderation for all people other than pregnant mothers, and mothers nursing infant children. It is only these 4 varieties that should be avoided in the two circumstances just mentioned. Lobster is not included in the list of fish to avoid when pregnant.

Lobster is indeed an excellent source of lean protein. 100 grams of lobster meat contains 98 calories, 21 grams of protein, and only 0.6 grams of fat. Contrast that to 100 grams of white, skinless chicken meat which has 168 calories, 31 grams of protein, and 3.6 grams of fat. Gram for gram, even skinless chicken contains in excess of 500% more fat than lobster. Lean beef contains more than 10 times as much fat as lobster. Obviously, lobster is an excellent source of lean protein.

Lobster is more than just a lean source of protein. Lobster also contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with good heart health. There are several valuable benefits from a diet which regularly contains Omega-3 fatty acids. Again quoting from the American Heart Association, "The ways that omega-3 fatty acids reduce CVD (cardio-vascular disease) risk are still being studied. However, research has shown that they decrease risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac death, decrease triglyceride levels, decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure (slightly)." The report further states, "Large-scale epidemiologic studies suggest that people at risk for coronary heart disease benefit from consuming omega-3 fatty acids from plants and marine sources."

Lobster does not contain as much Omega-3 fatty acids as salmon, which has the highest content, but is a good source nonetheless.

In summary, lobster is high in protein, extremely low in fat, is a beneficial source of Omega-3 fatty acids which are healthy for the heart and reduce the growth rate of plaque. Lobsters feed primarily on live food: fish, crabs, clams and mussels. Lobster have a very healthy diet which would be beneficial to humans, not harmful to them.

Japan targeted by cyber attacks 'from China' !

Websites operated by the Japanese government and the nation's biggest defence contractor have been targeted by cyber attacks at the weekend that apparently originated in China, according to the National Police Agency.

The attacks took place on Saturday and Sunday - the 80th anniversary of the Manchurian Incident, which led to the Japanese invasion of northern China - and affected the sites of the National Personnel Authority, the Cabinet Office and a government video distribution service.

The disruption was in the form of denial-of-service attacks, in which hackers transmit huge amounts of data to a site in order to overwhelm its capacity to function.

The agency said 90 per cent of the attacks had been traced back to China, where earlier online messages had been calling for attacks on Japanese sites to mark the anniversary of the 1931 Manchurian Incident.

Hackers also targeted Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., which has admitted that computers and servers at eight of its plants across the country had been compromised.

Media reported that the company's submarine technology, missile guidance and propulsion data and nuclear plant component information had been the target of the attacks.

The company said in a statement that it first noticed a problem with its cyber defences in mid-August.

The Yomiuri newspaper reported that 80 computers at the company's headquarters in Tokyo have been found to be infected with viruses. Similar viruses - which are able to steal information from infected computer hardware - were found at Mitsubishi Heavy facilities in Kobe, where the company makes submarines and parts for nuclear power stations.

The Nagasaki shipyard, where destroyers are built, was also compromised, along with plants in Nagoya where the company designs and builds guidance and propulsion systems for rockets and missiles.

The eight different viruses that have been identified also allow hackers to operate infected computers remotely and even listen to people speaking through the computers' microphones.

Mitsubishi Heavy has reported the targeted "spear attacks", the first of their kind against Japan's defence industry, to the police.

Molecular Changes in Brains of Depressed Women!

Researchers from the University of Pittsburg in the United States have found molecular changes in the brains of women who are depressed, leading to hopes of better understanding of mental illnesses in future.

The National Institute of Mental Health funded study included 21 women who were suffering from depression and 21 women with no history of depression.

The researchers analyzed the post-mortem brain tissue samples and found that those who suffered from depression showed pattern of reduced expression of certain genes in a region of brain known as amygdala, which is responsible for sensing and expressing emotion.

“It seemed to us that if there were molecular changes in the depressed brain, we might be able to better identify them in samples that come from females. Indeed, our findings give us a better understanding of the biology of this common and often debilitating psychiatric illness”, lead researcher Etienne Sibille wrote in the study that has been published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.
